What Size Should I Buy for a Baby Shower Gift?

Baby Clothes Sizing

You've been invited to a baby shower and you want to buy baby clothes. What size should you buy?

Baby showers are very exciting. Everyone's gift will be "on display" at the shower as the mother-to-be opens her presents for all to see. You want to buy a nice gift that the new mom will love and use. You decide to buy baby clothes but wonder what size to buy.

The baby hasn't been born yet so you don't know what size he or she will need. You may not even know if it's a he or a she. You don't know if the baby will be born early and be a preemie. Or, if the baby will be born on time and be big. What if you buy baby clothes and the baby is already too big for the outfit? Then it would be a waste of money and useless to the mom.

Another thing to consider is what clothing sizes other gift givers at the baby shower will be buying. What if you all buy the same size and the new mom has too much in the same size? The baby will outgrow some of the outfits before getting to wear them.

So, what size baby clothes should you buy for a baby shower gift?

Most people buy newborn or 0-6 months when buying for a baby shower gift. But, there is nothing wrong with thinking ahead and buying 6-12 months or even 12-18 months. It's probably not appropriate to buy too far ahead and burden a busy, new mom with storing something the child won't use until they are 5. Realistically, a new mom will appreciate baby clothes up to size 2T (2 years).

There will be a day, not far in the future, that the new mom will be dressing her baby and all the clothes in the drawer will be too small. It happens without warning. At that very moment, she's going to be very happy to have something in the "next size" so she can dress her baby and go to the store to buy a new wardrobe for her bundle of joy.

  1. Thank you!!! I’m going to a jack and jill baby shower without a Jill. I’m a man, I had no idea what to do for a gift. Now, I’m on my way to presenting the coolest gift she’ll get at the party.

    • Here are some cute fun ideas. Make baby words. Have someone select six consonants and two vowels. Then have your guests try to form as many baby related words using those letters. The person with the most baby words wins. You can adjust the number of consonants and vowels selected to make it harder or easier for your guests. Guess how many. Get a baby bottle and fill it up with mini-pacifiers, candy, or any other item you like. Have your guests guess how many items are in the bottle. The winner can win the bottle full of candy or some other prize. I think this one is cute. Baby Shower Bag Game. Here’s what you do: 1. Take plain brown paper bags or colored gift bags and label each bag with a letter that spells out “B-A-B-Y S-H-O-W-E-R”. 2. Put an item for baby in each bag that corresponds with the letter on the bag (i.e. A’ can be aspirator, Y’ can be a yellow rubber duck, B’ for bib, etc.). Secure the bag closed so that guests can’t peek inside to see what the item is. 3. Pass the bags around to the guests and have them write down their guess on what is in each bag solely on feeling/shaking the bags. Let them know that the item in the bag starts with the letter on the bag. 4. Have the mommy-to-be open each bag to reveal what is inside. The items can be put into a nice basket for her to take home.

      • Definitely diapers. You can never have too many diapers. I didn’t get nearly enough of them at my baby shower. Add something practical to the gift. Pick up a bunch of little things and make a basket full of goodies. They have a bunch of stuff that most people never think to buy like pacifiers, pacifier wipes (to clean them if they drop on the ground), carseat toys, baggies to carry in the diaper bag for poopy diapers, etc. Just go see what you can find! You’ll have fun doing it!
